About Program Admission Requirements

The Bachelor of Education for French immersion addresses a provincial need to prepare additional, well-qualified French teachers. Glendon’s bilingual campus and excellence in language education provide the ideal setting for many of the required courses for this bilingual BEd.

Located at the Glendon campus, the Bachelor of Education (French) Concurrent Teacher Education Program is designed for those who wish to teach in French immersion, Core and Extended French classrooms at all certification levels. At least half of your courses will be taught in French and emphasis is on ensuring a deep understanding of Francophone culture. The program includes ongoing practicum components, providing student teachers with real-life working experience in the classroom.

Students in this option must be pursuing a Glendon BA degree. Emphasis is placed on ensuring excellent French language proficiency and a deep understanding of francophone cultures with a significant portion of the practicum being done in Ontario French Immersion schools. Courses are taught in English and French and applicants will be required to successfully complete a French proficiency assessment.

Some of your BEd courses will be held at the Keele campus, but you can take our free shuttle bus to get between both campuses—it runs regularly from morning to night.

Concurrent Teacher Education

Concurrent undergraduate programs are for students already enrolled in another undergraduate Faculty. You enter the concurrent program in your third or fourth year. Selection is based on:

  • academic achievement
  • oral communication abilities
  • personal characteristics relevant to the teaching profession

Two years are added to your undergraduate studies and in the remaining three or four years you work concurrently to complete the requirements of your undergraduate program as well as the professional teaching program.

Experiential/Exchange Education Opportunities
This program offers a third-year exchange option in a Francophone environment, such as Quebec, other parts of Canada and several European locations. As well, you will have a choice of an equivalent experience of 12 credits in French within a French cultural context.

You are required to provide official evidence of academic achievement in secondary education. This can be demonstrated through:

  • Final grades under the Ontario curriculum (obtained through correspondence, night school or through TVO)
  • Credentials through other curricula, such as results from Advanced Placement (AP) or Advanced-level courses in the General Certificate of Education (Gene). (Students may register to sit for the AP and GCE examinations as private candidates.)

In the absence of final grades in courses:

  • You must submit the results of standardized tests such as the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) with a minimum of 550 (Reading) and 550 (Math) or a composite American College Testing (ACT) score of 24.
  • Your application will be reviewed by an admissions sub-committee. If admitted, you will not be eligible for entrance scholarships. You will be considered for continuing student scholarships at the end of your first year of study, if you satisfy those criteria.

You may also be required to provide proof of language proficiency. You will be considered for entrance scholarships on the basis of your overall averages in the six 4U/4M (Ontario curriculum) or equivalent courses.
